#WildflowersUnscripted 90's Story Setting

It was a time when black artists made a difference in the music industry.

Men rallied to say anything they wanted in rap songs. Uncle Luke's song "I Wanna Rock" came out in 1990. While men degraded women in lyrics, they balanced it out with appreciative music also. For some of us, artists like Jodeci and Boys 2 Men are the soundtrack of our 90's. In fact they are the soundtrack to what we've always imagined our love lives should be like. Women had a lot of affection for men in music, no matter what a man was doing wrong.

For women, it was a time where belly shirts and even bras could be fashionably worn without the word "hoe" being associated to the woman in the outfit. SWV and Salt N Pepa were some of my fashion idols. Women rocked sports gear and loud colors. I wanted to shop in Mary J. Blige's closet. More ladies wore their real hair and braids than weave. I appreciated my hair being braided up just because singer Brandy was wearing her hair that way. When they got her nails done, they could have super long fake colorful nails. Whether they were dressed regularly in comfortable clothes or did the most ghetto look out, she were seen as goddesses. The raunchy lyrics from men did not take away from the beauty of women.

Even though I had no singing talent, I dreamed of becoming Brandy when I grew up. Brandy's "Sittin' Up In My Room" is now 19 years old.

Although I wasn't hold enough to be committed to a man yet, Mokenstef's "He's Mine" became the soundtrack to my future love life. That basically means one day I'd grow to hold a man down no matter what. "He's Mine" is now 19 years old.

Artists like Changing Faces and Mary. J Blige prepared me for heartache early on. Back then I didn't know what I was singing, but singing the words before experiences made the experiences easier to cope with.

"Butterfly, Oh-Oh, that's old. Let me see that Tootsie Roll." I especially wanted to point out the  "Tootsie Roll is now 20 years old.

Day 3 of #WildFlowersUnscripted writing challenge is supposed to be a 70's, 80's, or 90's story setting.  Upon noticing how old some of my favorite songs from back in the day are I decided to dedicate it to the 90's.

  1. Great memories right here! Going ot have to go and play some Brandy! Thanks!

  2. You could NOT tell me I wouldn't be a big name singer like Brandy when I grew up. 90s R&B music bring me back to such a innocent time/place. Great post!
